Checked out of your hotel and planning a last look inside St. Stephen’s Cathedral before your train or flight? From mid-October 2026 that no longer works with a suitcase in tow. The Stephansdom is banning large suitcases and trolleys from the church.
What is changing at the Stephansdom?
The cathedral chapter is extending its house rules: large suitcases and trolleys may no longer be taken inside. The cathedral describes this as a preventive, routine measure to protect the church and its visitors, and has not named a specific reason.
With more than 20,000 visitors a day, St. Stephen’s Cathedral is the most visited sight in Austria. The cathedral says the rule brings it in line with what other large churches and cultural sites already do.
What we don’t know yet
- The exact start date. The cathedral has only said “mid-October”.
- What counts as “large”? No dimensions have been published.
- How and where bags will be checked.
We will update this article as soon as the cathedral publishes more details.
Where to leave your luggage
There is no luggage room, and there are no lockers at the cathedral. The cathedral advises visitors to leave their bags at their hotel or at a luggage storage facility, for example at a railway station.
- Your hotel: most Vienna hotels will keep your bags for free after check-out. Ask at reception.
- Railway stations: the larger stations have luggage lockers. The ÖBB website lists which stations have them.
- Private luggage storage: several providers in the city center let you book a spot online.
Our tip
Plan the cathedral for a day when you are not travelling. If your arrival or departure day is the only option, drop your bags first and then take the U-Bahn (U1 or U3) to Stephansplatz.
