For this trip to Vienna, I was looking for a hotel that was practical first, pretty second. I needed something close to the UNO City area, not too expensive, with a direct metro line into the centre. That is how I ended up at Motel One Vienna Donau City.
It is not a “postcard Vienna” location with cobbled streets and old cafés on the corner, but after staying here, I can say: it makes a lot of sense for the right kind of trip.
Location: business district, quick into the centre

If you arrive by metro, you get off at Kaisermühlen VIC on line U1. Follow the signs for Donau City, take the escalator or stairs down, and within a few minutes you are outside between glass towers and wide pavements. From there, it is about a five-minute walk to the hotel entrance. The route is easy, even in the evening.
The area itself is very much business Vienna: offices, conference buildings, the Vienna International Centre (UNO City) and modern flat blocks. At weekends, it can feel almost empty. There is not much street life, and you will not stumble out of the hotel straight into a bar street.
The upside is obvious as soon as you go to sleep. It is quiet, there is little traffic, and you do not get pub noise under your window. And thanks to the U1, you are in the historic centre in under 15 minutes. You ride straight to places like Stephansplatz or Karlsplatz without changing lines.
If you are in Vienna for meetings in UNO City or with one of the international organisations, the location is close to perfect. You can simply walk to your appointment. In that case, the value for money is difficult to beat.
First impression: modern, calm and a bit cosy
From the outside the hotel blends in with the rest of Donau City: modern, straight lines, lots of glass. Inside, it gets friendlier. The lobby is open and airy, with different corners: lounge seating, the bar, and a separate breakfast area.
The typical Motel One design is there, but it feels fresher here because the hotel is still relatively new. Soft colours, some playful design pieces and warm lighting make it a place where you actually want to sit for a while, not just pass through on your way to the lift.
Check in was quick and relaxed. Staff were friendly, explained the basics and that was it. No fuss, no performance. Exactly what you want when you have luggage in your hand and a long day behind you.
Room: more space than you might expect
If you have stayed in other Motel One hotels, you probably expect a compact room. Here in Wien Donau City the layout is similar, but I found the room slightly more spacious than average. Not huge, but enough that you do not bump into your suitcase every time you move.
The bed is the main event: firm but comfortable mattress, decent pillows and fresh linen. The sound insulation is good. I hardly heard anything from the corridor and nothing from outside, which is a big plus if you are tired after a full day in the city.
The rest of the room is practical. There is a small desk or table, a chair, several power sockets, a flat-screen TV and enough lighting to read or work in the evening. Storage is simple but workable. You are not here for a week-long unpacking session, but for a city break, it does the job.
There are also barrier-free rooms and some rooms with a view towards the Danube. If that matters to you, it is worth mentioning it when you book.
Bathroom and facilities: compact, clean, functional

The bathroom fits the overall concept: small, but cleverly arranged. You get a proper shower with good water pressure and stable temperature, which is more important than fancy fittings in the end. The sink area is clean and straightforward, with just enough counter space for your toiletries so you don’t have to balance everything on the edge.
There’s a large mirror, decent lighting and the usual basics like a hairdryer and towels that actually dry instead of just looking nice. Storage is simple but practical: a couple of hooks, a shelf, space under the sink – nothing luxurious, but you don’t end up juggling your stuff. Everything still feels brand new and spotlessly clean, which makes the whole bathroom come across as more “efficient and reliable” than “small and cramped”.
In terms of facilities you get what you expect from this kind of hotel: reliable Wi-Fi, air conditioning, a TV, a decent work surface and comfortable lighting. Nothing over the top, but the basics are solid and up to date. During our stay, we tested the Wi-Fi speed several times and consistently got between 150 and 200 Mbit/s, which is a perfect result for a hotel – and in our case even faster than at home.
Bar and gin: the part where Motel One has fun

One of the strong points of this hotel is the bar area. During tday, day it works well as a quiet corner for a coffee and a laptop. In the evening it turns into a relaxed hotel bar where business travellers, city break couples and solo travellers mix quite naturally.
And then there is the gin. Motel One has a bit of a tradition here, and Donau City is no exception. The bar has its own gin menu with more than 50 different types. You will find the big international names, but also regional and lesser known bottles you do not see everywhere.
If you like gin even a little, it is worth taking a moment to read the menu and try something new instead of ordering the standard option. Despite the selection, the prices are still reasonable, especially compared to many bars in the inner city.
When the rooftop One Bar is open, you also get a nice bonus: views over the modern Donau City skyline, towards the Danube and the Donauinsel. It is a different side of Vienna, but a good one to experience once you have seen the old town.
Breakfast: easy, decent and not wildly overpriced

Breakfast at Motel One Vienna Donau City is set up as a self-service buffet. Think different types of bread and rolls, cold cuts, cheese, spreads, yoghurt, muesli and a few extras. It is not a luxury hotel brunch, but everything looked fresh and was topped up regularly while I was there.
The price is around 18 euro. That is not cheap, but if you go to a good bakery in Vienna for coffee, a couple of well-filled rolls and something sweet, you will also spend a fair amount. In the end, the difference is sometimes smaller than you expect.
The real advantage is convenience. You walk down from your room, eat, have your coffee, and you are ready to jump on the metro. On days when you want to start early and see a lot, that simplicity is worth something.
If you prefer breakfast outside the hotel once or twice, there’s a Ströck bakery about a four-minute walk from Motel One. An avocado toast with a coffee will set you back around 10 euro, which is very reasonable for Vienna, and they also do a nice matcha if you are into that.
What is nearby: Donau, CopaBeach and Donauinsel
Even though the immediate area feels business-like, you are actually close to a few relaxing spots. In summer, CopaBeach on the Danube is popular, with a kind of urban beach atmosphere, deck chairs and casual places for a drink.
The Donauinsel and Donaupark with the Danube Tower are also nearby. On a sunny afternoon, you can easily fit in a walk along the water or a short break in the park between sightseeing in the old town and dinner back in the centre.
All the classic sights – the Stephansdom, the Ringstraße, the museums in the first district – are reachable on the U1 without changing lines. That makes it easy to combine the historic and modern sides of Vienna in one trip.

Who this hotel is really for
Motel One Vienna Donau City will not be everyone’s dream hotel, and that is fine. It does not try to be a romantic boutique place in a Gründerzeit building. Instead, it is clearly aimed at a few types of guest:
- City break travellers who prefer smart over flashy
You want to spend your money on food, museums, and experiences rather than on a bed in the absolute centre. As long as you can get there quickly on the metro, you are happy. - Business travellers with meetings in UNO City or the surrounding offices
You can walk to your appointments, come back to a quiet room, and still reach the inner city in the evening without a long commute. For this use, case, the price–quality ratio is excellent. - People who like a calm base at night
Busy days in the city, then back to a quiet district, a drink in the bar, and sleep. If that sounds like your rhythm, the location will probably suit you.
In short: Motel One Wien Donau City is not the hotel you stumble upon while wandering the old streets of Vienna. It is the hotel that makes perfect sense once you look at the metro map and your schedule. You trade a bit of charm in the immediate surroundings for comfort, quiet nights and a more sensible bill at check-out. For many trips, that is an excellent deal.
